VM0042

Also known as: Improved Agricultural Land Management, IALM

Verra methodology for Improved Agricultural Land Management — credits practices like cover cropping, reduced tillage, and nutrient management that increase soil-carbon stocks.

VM0042 is Verra's methodology for Improved Agricultural Land Management (IALM), launched in 2020. It covers a wide set of soil-carbon and agronomic practices: cover cropping, reduced or no-till, nutrient-management optimisation, crop-rotation diversification, biochar application, and conversion of cropland to perennial cover. Baselines are typically established through region-specific reference-management systems plus on-farm sampling.

VM0042 is increasingly relevant to the Indonesian palm-oil and rice-paddy sectors, where soil-carbon and methane reductions are both eligible. Methane reductions from rice paddies are large in tonnage terms but require strict measurement protocols, often combining tier-3 models with chamber measurements. As of 2024, the bulk of VM0042 projects globally are in the US, Latin America, and Australia; Indonesian adoption has lagged but interest is rising as ICVCM CCP eligibility lifts demand.
