Full explainer
Retirement is the registry action that permanently removes a carbon credit from circulation by logging it against a specific beneficiary or claim. Each retirement is publicly recorded in the issuing registry (Verra, Gold Standard, SRN-PPI) with the serial number, vintage, retiring entity, and a beneficiary statement (e.g. 'on behalf of <Company> for FY2024 scope-1 emissions').
Retirement is the action that converts a tradeable credit into an actual offset — only retired credits can be claimed against an emissions target. A credit that is held in an account but not retired is still in active circulation and may be re-traded. The cumulative retirement volume per project is one of the canonical signals on a project's integrity dashboard; KarbonLens surfaces it on the project detail page and via the integrity-score transparency sub-component.
