Methodology
VM0044
Also known as: Methodology for Biochar Utilization
TL;DR
Verra's biochar methodology, version 1.2 active from June 2025 and ICVCM CCP-approved, crediting durable carbon storage in soils and materials.
Full explainer
VM0044 is the Verified Carbon Standard methodology for crediting biochar production and utilisation. Biochar — a stable, charcoal-like product made from pyrolysing biomass — is treated as long-term carbon storage when applied to soils, used as a concrete additive, or otherwise locked into durable end-uses. The methodology quantifies the durable fraction and discounts for permanence.
Version 1.2 of VM0044 became active in June 2025 and was among the early methodologies to receive ICVCM Core Carbon Principle eligibility, validating the engineered-removal pathway. In the Indonesian context, biochar projects are still nascent, but agricultural-residue feedstocks (rice husk, palm-shell biomass) make it a plausible adjacency to existing AFOLU and bioenergy operations.
