CCBA
Also known as: Climate Community and Biodiversity Alliance, CCB Standards
TL;DR
Multi-stakeholder alliance whose CCB Standard certifies the social and biodiversity co-benefits of land-based carbon projects — often layered on top of VCS.
Full explainer
CCBA — the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance — is the multi-stakeholder body that maintains the CCB Standard, a co-benefit certification frequently layered on top of VCS land-based projects. A project that achieves CCB Gold or Distinct status has demonstrated, through third-party validation, that it produces measurable community and biodiversity outcomes beyond its core carbon reductions.
For Indonesian REDD+ projects, CCB certification is particularly common — most flagship peatland and biodiversity-rich projects (Katingan Mentaya, Rimba Raya, etc.) are dual-certified VCS+CCB. The premium price differential for CCB-stacked credits has been ~10-30% over plain VCS over the past decade. CCBA was acquired by Verra in 2017; CCB validation is now operationally run by Verra alongside VCS but the standard retains its independent identity.
